• Well, unless your website has unusually high traffic, it's not going to have much effect. Which means you would need something to attract people to your website. And if it's just people posting random links to videos on youtube, that's unlikely to attract anybody at all, since they can get the same thing by just clicking on random things on youtube itself.
• It could be interesting, but also consider that you will probably have a very large spam problem (people posting their own video multiple times to get more views). So, you'll want to have some kind of filtering system to prevent spam.
  Also, you need to figure out how you're going to be able to run the site. Are you going to have a small fee for someone to post their videos, or will there be 3rd party ads?

  It's a neat idea, but you need to think about all the things people could do to screw things up beforehand.

How much bandwidth will I need? I'll have pretty lean pages.

Are there web hosting companies out there with a pay-as-you go plan who can scale up automatically? My concern is that I do not want to pay in advance with a high capacity tariff plan and wait for the traffic to come. I would like tested hosts who are already hosting websites with high traffic and still cater to the SOHO market.

  As for how much bandwidth you will need, work out what the average viewer will look at on your site, the file size of everything they will see (ie page+images for each page+video+audio) then multiply that by your expected visitor amount. For the purposes of hosting they count 1MB as 1000KB (instead of 1024KB) and 1GB as 1000MB (instead of 1024MB).

• I feel bad for your friend and can empathize. I've said this before and people thought I was "exaggerating" as you thought your friend was. Those who run the site decide which videos and channels will get views and which ones wont. They pay people who get viral videos, an enormous amount of subs, and those who get a certain a high number of channel views.

  They're upset with Sub4Sub channels who generate enormous amounts of views on videos and channels. Those channels are a close knit community who support each other's channels. Youtube's been making it difficult of late for those users. Youtube doesn't want tons of viral channels like: Raywilliamjohnson, Hot4words, ShaneDawson and a few others. With the very real threat of having to "pay up", they're trying to keep profits they make from advertising and promotions so all channels across the board with the exceptions of celebrities, are now experiencing "controlled" views.

  Started my channel in March, now have 4008 views, vid I'm featuring had 2500 views when I started featuring it. Counter's barely moved. That's life on Youtube.
